THE STAFF MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE!

Much of our staff here at 4-H Camp Shankitunk gained their experience through being campers. We have a unique Counselor In Training program here, and will always hire a potential employee who's been through the CIT program over someone who hasn't.

CIT programs begin at the age of 14 with CIT I. CIT I is a very basic class about what it means to be a counselor. It focuses on team building and cooperation. The next year campers come to camp, they can sign up for CIT II. CIT II is a double class period which is more focused on counseling. The first class period is spent learning from the program director, and the second is spent observing counselors at work in the classes. During these two years of CIT, the potential candidates are observed by the staff to see what kind of leader and role model the candidate can be. If the staff likes what they see in the CIT, he or she is invited back for CIT III. CIT III is a very intense 2 week program.

The CIT's mornings are spent with the program director and afternoons are spent observing counselors during the first week. When the second week comes, the CIT becomes a real counselor. He or she is put into a cabin with one other counselor and a group of campers. They teach four classes a day. They have all the privileges of a real counselor. This is where we see what they're made of!
